A LARGE congregation turned out in Exeter to say a final farewell to the man reputed to be the smallest lorry driver in the South West.
Peter 'Titch' Turner, 73, who lived in Willand, near Cullompton, died in hospital on New Year's Eve and his funeral was held yesterday at the Exeter and Devon Crematorium, Topsham Road.
His sister Joyce Isaac, 68, from Exwick, Exeter, said: "There was a very good turnout. We were expecting a lot of people because he was so well-known and well liked, not just in Exeter and Exminster, where he had lived, but also from around the country given all the friends he made when he was on the lorries.
"It was a fitting send off for such a wonderful man who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him
"I am really grateful for all whose turned up to make it a special day."
mr Turner, who was 4ft 7in tall, came to Exeter when he was 16, and found work on local farms.
Mrs Isaac said: "He lived all over the place and got to know about driving on farms and while he was in the army.
"He could drive anything, no matter how big. They would put blocks on the pedals to help him but there was nothing he did not know about heavy lorries.
"He was also very popular on the CB radio, his call name was The Weasel.
"Peter was well-known as the smallest lorry driver in the South West.
"He would buy cars and keep them a couple of weeks then sell them again — he would get bored with them and want a new one."
Mr Turner outlived his wife but leaves six children and a stepson.
Mrs Isaac said he had been struck down by a virus shortly before his death which affected his internal organs.
